Scary movie fans are in for a treat… or a trick, depending on how you look at it. Here are our picks for some of the best horror movies of the year. Are there any we’ve missed?

Slender Man

The myth of Slender Man originated on the Something Awful forum some years ago, when users began to post videos, images and artwork of a freakishly tall shadowy figure. The character has remained a part of the deep dark imaginings of internet lore ever since. The 2018 film adaptation tells the tale of four high school girls who perform a ritual in an attempt to disprove the existence of the Slender Man. But when one of the girls goes missing, their task becomes that much harder. This spooky screening is coming to cinemas this August.

Hereditary

Even in death, reclusive grandmother and matriarch of the Graham family, Ellen, continues to upset and disturb her living relatives. Terror takes over their lives as their mother struggles to unravel the fraught relationship she had with Nanna Ellen, unearthing the dark fate the Graham women will inherit. Not only is this flick spooky as hell, it’s was branded “scariest movie in years” after its midnight screening as Sundance Film Festival. Staring horror legend Toni Collette, this one is not for the faint of heart!

The Meg

Based on the New York Times best-seller, The Meg is a fast-paced sea monster thriller to compete with classics like Jaws and Deep Blue Sea. A submarine which is part of an international deep sea observation program is attached by a giant creature long thought to be extinct. The attacker is a nearly 80-foot long super shark known as a Megalodon, which has been roaming the deepest trenches of the ocean since prehistoric times. After being attacked, the submarine sinks to the bottom of the ocean trench, and with time running out, deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor, and visionary Chinese oceanographer Zhang, must get them out.

A Quiet Place

Another highly rated film of 2018, A Quiet Place is set in an imaginary not-too-distant future, where the world has been overrun by a plague of vicious killing machines. Hunting by sound and exhibiting super-hearing, the monsters progress along their path of destruction to the home of a rural American family. The Abbotts must try to stay alive and stay human, as these near-invincible creatures do their best to snuff out life on earth.

A Quiet Place has been called “clever” and “original,” with a rotten Tomatoes rating of 95%. Written and directed by John Krasinski of The Office, and starring Edge of Tomorrow heroine Emily Blunt.
