The folks at Disney know a thing or two about making great movies. From the iconic princesses, to its musical smashes, and its current Pixar powerhouses, Disney films have played a formative role in the childhoods of people of all ages, all over the world.
Disney’s latest venture to reimagine some of its most beloved animated classics as live-action spectaculars has introduced a new generation of audiences to some of our favourite stories. With a slate of films hitting our screens this year - kicking off next week! - here’s what we have to look forward to.
The wait is almost over to see Tim Burton’s version of this family favourite. Known for his striking visual style (think the feast for the senses he dished up in Alice in Wonderland), Burton has promised a new take on the tale of Dumbo the flying elephant. Not known for shying away from darker themes, we can’t wait to see how Burton reimagines the turn-of-the-century setting of Dumbo’s world.
Starring: Colin Farrell, Danny DeVito, Michael Keaton, Eva Green
Release: March 2019
Disney certainly raised eyebrows last month when they unveiled the first images of Will Smith in the iconic Genie blue. But you can’t judge a book by its cover, and we’re certainly no less excited to catch up with Aladdin after all these years (the original was released 27 years ago!)
We can expect to hear our fave tunes like A Whole New World along with new tracks from the writers of The Greatest Showman, Pasek and Paul. It’s going to be a long two months but we know this one will be worth the wait!
Starring: Mena Massoud, Will Smith, Naomi Scott
Release: May 2019
The Lion King
There’s probably not a cat owner in the world who hasn’t slowly lifted their pet into the sky to the sounds of The Circle of Life. The Lion King is one of Disney’s most well-known - and well-loved - films of all time, spawning sequels and a Broadway musical. It’s now getting the remake treatment in 2019, and Disney is really going all out on this one.
There’s barely room to move for stars in this cast (including a return appearance from the OG Mufasa, James Earl Jones), and the film’s November teaser became Disney’s most-watched trailer debut EVER with over 224 million views in just 24 hours.
We can certainly feel the love tonight for this film, so we’ll be prepared - but we just can’t wait to be in the cinema when this one comes out!
Starring: Donald Glover, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Seth Rogen, James Earl Jones
Release: July 2019
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, Disney’s reign at the box office isn’t slowing down with production already underway for a live-action interpretation of Mulan.
Set for release in 2020, Mulan has started shooting in China and New Zealand under the helm of director Niki Caro. Aside from a sneak peek given last year, we’re still eagerly awaiting more details on what the live action Mulan will look like!
Starring: Liu Yifei, Jet Li, Gong Li
Release: March 2020
